Instructions

Notes

  1. Motifs are worked separately, then joined together in 5 strips of 4 motifs.

  2. Each motif is worked with right side facing at all times. Do not join at end of rounds unless otherwise instructed.

  3. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Cut old color unless otherwise instructed.

  4. Drop uncut color not in use to wrong side of piece until next needed.

Special Stitches

  1. dsc (deep single crochet) = Sc in base of indicated sc.

  2. dc2tog-over-7 (double crochet decrease over 7 stitches) = *Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops*, skip next 5 stitches; repeat from * to *, yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

  3. surface slip st (surface slip stitch) = With yarn held on wrong side, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over, pull loop to right side and through loop on hook.

Special Techniques

  1. Adjustable-ring method = Wrap yarn into a ring, ensuring that the tail falls behind the working yarn. Grip ring and tail firmly between middle finger and thumb. Insert hook through center of ring, yarn over (with working yarn) and draw up a loop. Work stitches of first round in the ring, working over both strands (the tail and the ring). After the first round of stitches is worked, pull gently, but firmly, on tail to tighten ring.

  2. Join with sc = Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

Blanket

Motif (make 20: 4 motifs in each color sequence) 

  1. With first color, make an adjustable ring.

  2. Round 1: Ch 1, 10 hdc in ring; join with slip st in first hdc; change to 2nd color in join—10 hdc. Pull gently on beginning tail to close ring.

  3. Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * 3 times; join with slip st in first sc; change to 3rd color in join—15 sc. Do not cut 2nd color.

  4. Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; repeat from * 3 times, 2 sc in next st, sc in last st—20 sc. 

  5. Round 4: *Dsc in next sc, sc in next sc, (hdc, dc, hdc) in next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * 4 times; change to 4th color—15 sc, 10 hdc, and 5 dc.

  6. Round 5: *Dsc in base of next dsc, 2 hdc in next sc, 2 dc in next hdc, 3 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next sc; repeat from * 4 times; join with slip st in first dsc—5 dsc, 20 hdc, 20 dc, and five 3-dc groups

  7. Drop loop from hook and place on marker to prevent unravelling.

  8. Pick up 2nd color and work surface slip st in each st of Round 2. Fasten off.

  9. Round 6: Join A with slip st in center dc of any 3-dc group, 2 sc in same dc, *2 hdc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc2tog-over-7, 2 dc in next dc, 2 hdc in next dc**, 3 sc in next dc; repeat from * 4 times, ending last repeat at **, sc in same dc as first 2 sc; join with slip st in first sc.

  10. Drop loop from hook and place on marker to prevent unravelling.

  11. Pick up 4th color and work surface slip st in each st of Round 5. Fasten off.

  12. Round 7: Pick up A loop, ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), *dc in each st to next dc2tog-over-7, dc in next dc2tog-over-7, 2 tr in space between same dc2tog-over-7 and 5 skipped sts**, dc in each st to next dc2tog-over-7, dc in next dc2tog-over-7, 3 tr in space between same dc2tog-over-7 and 5 skipped sts; repeat from * twice, ending last repeat at **, dc in each remaining st; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3; change to first color in join—60 dc and 12 tr. Do not cut A.

  13. Round 8: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next 3 sts, *hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, 3 tr in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts**, sc in next 7 sts; repeat from * 3 times, ending last repeat at **, sc in last 3 sts; join with slip st in first sc; change to 2nd color in join—80 sts.

  14. Round 9: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next 3 sts, *dc in next 3 hdc, dc in next 2 dc, tr in next tr, 5 tr in next tr (corner made), tr in next tr, dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next 3 hdc**, sc in next 7 sc; repeat from * 3 times, ending last repeat at **, sc in last 3 sc; join with slip st in first sc; change to B in join—28 sc, 24 hdc, 16 dc, 8 tr, and four 5-tr groups. Do not cut 2nd color.

  15. Round 10: Ch 1, *sc in each st to next 5-tr group, sc in next tr, hdc in next tr, dc in next tr, hdc in next tr, sc in next tr; repeat from * 3 times, sc in each remaining st; join with slip st in first sc—112 sts. Fasten off.

  16. Pick up A and work surface slip st in each st of Round 7. Fasten off.

  17. Pick up 2nd color and work surface slip st in each st of Round 9. Fasten off. 

Finishing

  1. Assembly
    Arrange motifs as shown in assembly diagram, rotating motifs randomly so flowers are not all aligned in the same way, and pin them together. Hold 2 motifs with wrong sides together.
    Joining Row 1: Join B with sc through both thicknesses of dc at top, skip next st on front motif; *working in back motif, sc in next st, skip next st; working in front motif, sc in next st, skip next st; repeat from * across to last st before next dc, sc in last st on back motif; working in both thicknesses, sc in next dc.
    Fasten off.
    Joining Row 2: Join B with sc through both thicknesses of dc at top, skip next st on back motif; *working in front motif, sc in next st, skip next st; working in back motif, sc in next st, skip next st; repeat from * across to last st before next dc, sc in last st on front motif; working in both thicknesses, sc in next dc.
    Fasten off.
    With wrong sides together, continue to join each motif in the same manner, alternating Joining Rows until 4 pieces are joined horizontally. Repeat to make 5 strips of 4 motifs.
    Join strips together in the same manner working across long edges. Do not fasten off until all motifs have been joined

  2. Edging
    Round 1: Join B with sc in any st, *sc in each st across to next seam, sc in edge st of seam; repeat from * around, working 3 sc in each corner st; join with slip st in first sc; change to A in join—514 sc and four 3-sc groups. Do not cut B.
    Round 2: With A, ch 3, *dc in each st around to center st of next 3-sc group, 3 dc in center st; repeat from * 3 times, dc in each remaining st; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3; change to C in join—522 dc and four 3-dc groups. Drop loop from hook and place on marker to prevent unravelling.
    Pick up B and work surface slip st in each st of Round 1.
    Fasten off.
    Round 3: Pick up C loop, ch 3, *dc in each st to center st of next 3-dc group, 5 dc in center st; repeat from * 3 times, dc in each remaining st; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3; change to D in join—530 dc and four 5-dc groups.
    Round 4: Ch 1, *hdc in each st to center st of next 5-dc group, 5 hdc in corner st; repeat from * 3 times, hdc in each remaining st; join with slip st in first hdc; change to B in join—546 hdc and four 5-hdc groups. Do not cut D.
    Round 5: Ch 1, *sc in each st to center st of next 5-hdc group, 3 sc in center st; repeat from * 3 times, sc in each remaining st; join with slip st in first sc— 562 sc and four 3-sc groups.
    Fasten off.
    Pick up D and work surface slip st in each st of Round 4.
    Fasten off.
