Vibrant Granny Triangle Throw

Even if you hated geometry in school, you are going to love this Vibrant Granny Triangle Throw. Who says that grannies have to square? With this free crochet afghan pattern, you will create granny triangles that are then worked together into this colorful crochet throw. The way the triangles fit together even creates several hexagons on this lightweight blanket. Drape it on chairs or couches in your living room so that you'll have a little warmth when the temps decrease. Or simply keep is as a room-brightening decoration.

Round 2: Slip st in next 2 dc, slip st in next ch-3 space, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 space, ch 2, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space, ch 2; repeat from * once; join with a slip stitch in top of beginning ch-3 – 3 ch-3 corner spaces; 3 ch-2 spaces
Note: When instructed to “Slip st to next ch-3 space”, work in same manner as in Round 2, slip stitching in each of the next 2 dc and in the ch-3 space itself.
Round 3: Slip st to next ch-3 space, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 space, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch 2, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch 2; repeat from * once; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 3 ch-3 corner spaces; 6 ch-2 spaces.
Round 4: Slip st to next ch-3 space, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 space, [ch 2, 3 dc] in each of next 2 ch-2 spaces, ch 2, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space, [ch 2, 3 dc] in each of next 2 ch-2 spaces, ch 2; repeat from * once; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 3 ch-3 corner spaces; 9 ch-2 spaces.

Instructions for Second and Successive Triangle Motifs:

  1. Make and join 65 more motifs same as First Triangle Motif, joining each to previous motif while completing last round as follows. Make and join motifs in numerical order following Assembly Diagram for color section and placement. Join motifs at ch-6, ch-4 and ch-2 spaces but not at ch-1 spaces.
Rounds 1-4: Work same as First Motif.

On Strip 1 (motifs 2 -11), join from top to bottom on 1 side only from corner to corner as follows while completing Round 5: continuing in pattern st for Round 5, join ch-6  spaces as follows: ch 3, drop loop, draw loop under to over through corresponding ch-6 space on adjacent motif, ch 3. Join ch-4 spaces as follows: ch 2, drop loop, draw loop under to over through corresponding ch-4 space on adjacent motif, ch 2. Join ch-2 spaces as follows: ch 1, drop loop, draw loop under to over through corresponding ch-2 space on adjacent motif, ch 1.
On Strips 2, 4, and 6, join top motif to corner of top motif on previous strip by working: ch 3, drop loop, draw loop under to over through corresponding ch-6 space on adjacent motif. Join next motif on 2 sides, joining corners to same motif on the left. Join next motif on 1 side and next motif on 2 sides working as follows where 3 ch-6 corners meet: ch 3, drop loop, draw loop under to over through opposite ch-3 space, ch 2, drop loop, draw loop under to over through opposite corner ch-3 space of next motif to the left, ch 3 and continue joining next side to the same triangle. Continue working this way joining as above wherever 3 motifs meet. Join other strips on 1 or 2 sides as necessary joining the same way where 6 triangles meet.

Instructions for Border:

  1. With right side facing, join F in ch-4 space to the left of top of strip 1.
Round 1: Working down left side edge, ch 1, sc in same space, ***** *[ch 2, skip next ch-1 space, sc in next ch-space] 8 times**, ch 2, dc in next ch-6 space (of first motif), ch 2, dc in next ch-6 space (of next motif), ch 2, dc in next ch-6 space (of next motif), ch 2, sc in next ch-4 space; repeat from * across side edge, ending last repeat at **, ch 2, (sc, ch 2, sc) in bottom left corner ch-2 space, working across bottom edge, ch 2, sc in next ch 4 space; ***repeat between [ ] 8 times, at junction between 3 motifs work: ch 1, dc in next ch-6 space, ch 1, dc in center ch-6 space, ch 1, dc in next ch-6 space, ch 1, sc in next ch-4 space; repeat between [ ] 8 times, at junction of 2 motifs work: ch 2, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 6 space****, ch 2, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 6 space, ch 2, sc in next ch 4 space; repeat from *** across bottom edge, ending last repeat at ****, ch 2, sc in next ch-4 space; repeat from ***** once, omitting last (ch 2, sc); join with a slip st in first sc.
