Holly Jolly Throw

Spread the holiday cheer with one of the best Christmas crochet patterns around!This Holly Jolly Throw will add a festive flair to your home during the winter season. With snowflakes flanked by classic red and green stripes, this crochet afghan is perfect for those chilly, fireside nights. You'll be shouting "Let it snow!" when you're warm and bundled up in this wonderful throw. It would also be a great present for friends or family. This crochet pattern would even make Scrooge smile!
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Materials:
- RED HEART® Super Saver®: 3 Skeins 319 Cherry Red A; 2 skeins 316 Soft White B; 1 skein each 672 Spring Green C, and 368 Paddy Green D.
- Crochet hook: 6mm [US J-10].
- Yarn needle
Size: Throw is 48” x 65”.
Gauge: Motif = 5¼”. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Abbreviations: A , B , C = Color A, Color B, Color C, etc; ch = chain; dc = double crochet; hdc = half double crochet; mm = millimeters; sc = single crochet; st(s) = stitch (es); [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified; * or ** = repeat whatever follows the * or ** as indicated.
Special Techniques: Connect = drop loop from hook, draw loop through corre - sponding space on completed motif, replace loop on hook. Shell = 3 dc all in indicated st.
THROW:
Panel A
Motif 1:
With B , ch 4; join with a slip st into a ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, [sc, ch 2] 8 times in ring; join.
Round 2: Slip st into next ch-2 space, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in same ch 2 space, ch 1, [(sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-2 space, ch 1] around, join beginning sc. Fasten B off.
Round 3: Join A in any ch-3 space, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) all in same space, * dc in next ch-1 space, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-3 space, dc in next ch-1 space **, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-3 space; repeat from * around, end last repeat at **; join.
Round 4: Slip st into next ch-2 space, ch 1, sc in same space, * ch 1, hdc in next dc, ch 1, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) all in next ch-3 space, ch 1, hdc in next dc, ch 1 **, sc in next ch-2 space; repeat from * around, end last repeat at **; join. Fasten A off.
Round 5: Join C in ch-1 space left of any corner, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) all in same space, * (sc, ch 2, sc) in each ch-1 space to corner, skip next dc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next dc, (sc, ch 4, sc) in corner space, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next dc; repeat from * around; join. Fasten C off.
Work same as for Motif 1 through Round 4.
Joining Round-Round 5: Join D in any corner space, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, connect, ch 2, sc) all in same corner space, (sc, ch 1, connect, ch 1, sc) all in next dc, [(sc, ch 1, con - nect, ch 1, sc) all in next ch-2 space] 4 times; skip next dc, (sc, ch 1, connect, ch 1, sc) all in next dc, (sc, ch 2, connect, ch 2, sc) all in next corner space, * (sc, ch 2, sc) in next dc, [(sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-1 space] 4 times; skip next dc, (sc, ch2, sc) in next dc **, (sc, ch 4, sc) all in next corner space; repeat from * around, end last repeat at **; join. Fasten D off.
Alternating C and D on Round 5, repeat directions for Motif 2 until 9 Motifs have been joined. Make 7 Panels in this way; following color sequence in diagram.
Stripe A:
Row 1 (Right Side): Working along long side of Panel A , join B in end ch-4 corner space, ch 1, sc in same space, * ch 1, sc in next space; repeat from * to center of 5th Motif of Panel, ch 1, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * to end. Fasten B off.
Row 2: Join A in 1st st of Row 1, ch 1, sc in same st, * shell in next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * across. Fasten A off. Row 3: Join B in 1st st, ch 3 (counts as dc), * ch 1, sc in center dc of next shell, ch 1, dc in next sc; repeat from * across. Fasten B off.
Row 4: With D , repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Join A in 1st st, ch 1, sc in same st, * ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) all in center dc of next shell, ch 1, sc in next sc; repeat from * across. Fasten A off.
Stripe B:
Working along long side of Panel B , repeat Rows 1-3 of Stripe A.
Row 4: With C , repeat Row 2 of Stripe A .
Joining Row-Row 5: Join A in 1st st, ch 1, sc in same st, * ch 1, (sc, ch 1, connect, ch 1, sc) all in center dc of next shell, ch 1, sc in next sc; repeat from * across. Fasten A off. Repeat directions for Stripes A and B to connect Panels according to diagram for placement and color.
BORDER:
Round 1 (Right Side): Join B in indicated corner (note: top right), ch 1, sc in same space, * ch 1, sc in next space; repeat from * across top edge, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) all in next Throw corner space; ** [ch 1, sc in next space] 7 times; ch 1, skip Row 1 of Stripe, [sc in end of next row, ch 1, sc in end of next row, ch 1, skip next row] 3 times; repeat from ** across side edge; [ch 1, sc in next space] 7 times; ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) all in next Throw corner space; repeat directions from * around Throw to 1st corner, (sc, ch 3) all in same corner; join; turn.
Round 2 (Wrong Side): Ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in same corner space, * ch 1, sc in next ch-1 space; repeat from * across to next corner, ch 1, ** (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner space; repeat from * around Throw, end last repeat at **; join, slip st across to ch-3 space; turn.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in next sc, * shell in next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * to next corner, 5 dc in corner space **; repeat from * to ** around Throw; join. Fasten B off.
Round 4 (Right Side): Join A in any sc between 2 shells, ch 1, sc in same st, * ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in center dc of next shell, ch 1, sc in next sc; repeat from * to next corner, ch 1, skip next dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) all in next dc, (sc, ch 4, sc) all in next dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) all in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc, sc in next sc **; repeat from * to ** around Throw; join.
