Understated Cable Stitch Crochet Afghan

The Understated Cable Stitch Crochet Afghan is a classic pattern you'll be able to use all year round. While other crochet patterns might get fancy with their colors or intricate details, this crochet afghan keeps things simple. Using the cable stitch to add a little texture, this crochet afghan is all about the little details. Once they come together, you're left with a crochet afghan full of charm. Every home needs a few classic crochet blanket patterns, and this one definitely fits the bill.
Crochet HookH/8 or 5 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Materials:
- RED HEART® Super Saver® 7 skeins 313 Aran
- Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9]
- Yarn Needle
Gauge:
Square = 7½” (17 cm).
CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge
Throw measures 47” x 62” (119 x 157 cm)
Abbreviations
ch= chain; dc= double crochet; mm=millimeters; sc= single crochet; st(s)= stitch(es); tr= treble crochet; yo= yarn over; * or **= repeat whatever follows the * or ** as indicated; [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified.
Special Abbreviations:
corner= (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) all in next ch-3 space.
fptr (front post treble)= [yo] twice, insert hook from front to back to front around post of st indicated, yo and draw yarn through, [yo and draw through 2 loops] 3 times. Skip st behind fptr.
cable (uses next 4 sts)= skip next 2 sts, fptr around next 2 sts; working in front of fptr just made, fptr around first skipped st, then around next skipped st. Skip 4 sts behind cable.
fpdc (front post double)= yo, insert hook from front to back to front around post of st indicated, yo and draw yarn through, [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice. Skip st behind fpdc.
DEC (decrease)= [draw up a loop in next st] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Square (Make 48)
Round 1 (Right Side): Ch 4; dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 3, [2 dc, ch 3] 3 times all in same ch; join with a slip st to top of beginning ch.
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in next dc, corner, * dc in next 2 dc, corner; repeat from * around; join to top of ch-3.
Round 3: Slip st in next 3 dc, ch 3, corner, dc in next dc, cable, * dc in next dc, corner, dc in next dc, cable; repeat from * around; join.
Round 4: Ch 4, * skip next dc, dc in next dc, corner, dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc, fpdc around next 4 fptr **, dc in next dc, ch 1; repeat from * around, end at **; join to 3rd ch of ch-4.
Round 5: Ch 4, * skip next st, dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc, corner, dc in next dc, [ch 1, skip next st, dc in next dc] twice, cable **, dc in next dc, ch 1; repeat from * around, end at **; join to 3rd ch of ch-4.
Round 6: Ch 4, * dc in next dc, [ch 1, skip next st, dc in next dc] twice, corner, dc in next dc, [ch 1, skip next st, dc in next dc] 3 times, fpdc around next 4 fptr **, dc in next dc, ch 1; repeat from * around, end at **; join to 3rd ch
of ch-4.
Round 7: Ch 4, * dc in next dc, [ch 1, skip next st, dc in next dc] 3 times, corner, dc in next dc, [ch 1, skip next st, dc in next dc] 4 times, cable **, dc in next dc, ch 1; repeat from * around, end at **; join to 3rd ch of ch-4.
Fasten off.
FINISHING
Sew 8 squares together into 6 vertical strips, then sew strips together.
BORDER
Round 1: With right side facing, join yarn in any corner ch-3 space; ** ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) all in corner space, * ch 1, sc in next dc, ch 1, skip next st, [sc in next st, ch 1, skip next st] 5 times, dec, [ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st] 6 times, ch 1, skip next ch, sc in next ch, ch 1, skip seam, sc in next ch, ch 1, skip next ch, [sc in next st, ch 1, skip next st] 6 times, decrease, [ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st] 6 times; repeat from * to next corner; repeat from ** around; ch 1; join with a slip st to first sc.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ** (sc, ch 2, sc) all in ch-2 space, sc in next sc, * ch 1, sc in next sc; repeat from * to next corner; repeat from ** around; ch 1; join.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 1, skip next sc, ** (sc, ch 2, sc) all in ch-2 space, ch 1, skip next sc, * sc in next sc, ch 1, skip next st; repeat from * to next corner; repeat from ** around; join.

I love this Understated Cable afghan for it color first of all. I like the diamond design further enhanced by the cables crossing the diamonds. This is cute.

Oh my! I'm going to have to pick up my pace on crocheting. I'm finding myself liking more and more of the intermediate patterns. This could be dangerous in a fun sort of way! This pattern looks very sophisticated and I notice there is a few new vocabulary words (i.e. new stitches) to learn also. Well, it never hurts to have something to reach for does it?
