Hi Cheryl Y. I feel sad that you won't be able to finish this project with just the fact that you don't know how to do the buttonhole stitch. Here is the link to the images of a buttonhole stitch. https//www.google.com.ph/search?q=buttonholestitch == biw=1366bih=631tbm=ischtbo=usource=univsa=Xved=0ah == UKEwitpuqch4MAhUDqqYKHZ4yCLgQsAQILw. This is indeed a very interesting pattern. The plaid looks like it's made from a woven fabric but it's really, again, crocheted. I'd like to do this project. too. Here is the link to the pattern for your easy reference http//www.freevintagecrochet.com/afghans/highlande == r-afghan-pattern.html. Enjoy your plaid design!

What a interesting pattern. After reading this pattern, I noticed there is no guide for stitch abbreviations. With that being said, what is a buttonhole stitch? I would like to make this but now sure how to finish this afghan, and I have been crocheting for 30 years now. Thank you..
