There is a great chert on freevintagecrochet.com for discontinued yarns. this pattern calls for BEAR BRAND or BUCILLA 4-fold Zephyr Germantown yarn which is a Fingering/sport weight yarn back then there really were no standards even today the standards differ.

The center of each square is made of Tunisian crochet, so be sure to have a long hook. Also, a modern-day size E hook is too small for worsted wt yarn, so I think that either the hook size is incorrect or that the yarn is 4-ply but not worsted weight.
