As the spring season arrives you'll get hit with the smell of lilacs which will remind you of this Spring Lace Crochet Squares Throw. Done in lilac, seafoam and grey heather you will love watching the crochet squares work up in a beautiful lace crochet pattern. Follow the assembly diagram to join the squares as you see your masterpiece transform. The border is worked in the single crochet stitch and really adds that dainty look you've been longing for.

Intermediate

Crochet Hook4.5 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Materials:

  • RED HEART® Soft®: 3 balls each of 9520 Seafoam A, 9528 Lilac B, and 9440 Lt. Grey Heather C.
  • Susan Bates ® Crochet Hook: 4.5 mm [US G-7]
  • Yarn needle
  • Diagram

GAUGE:
First 3 rounds of Square = 4½” (11.5 cm) in diameter from side to side; Square = 8” (20.5 cm) in diameter from side to side. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.


Throw measures 43½” (110.5 cm) wide x 60” (152.5 cm) long.

Special Abbreviations
ch-2 join: Ch 1, drop loop from hook, insert hook in corresponding ch-2 space on previous Square, draw dropped loop through, ch 1.
ch-4 join: Ch 2, drop loop from hook, insert hook in corresponding ch-4 space on previous Square, draw dropped loop through, ch 2.
ch-4 corner join: Ch 2, drop loop from hook, insert hook in corresponding ch-4 space on previous Square, draw dropped loop through, ch 1, skip next corner ch-4 space, drop loop from hook, insert hook in next corresponding ch-4 space on next Square, draw dropped loop through, ch 2.
shell: 5 dc in same st or space.
Color Sequence
Square 1: Make 18 with A for first color.
Square 2: Make 17 with B for first color.

 

THROW
First Square 1 (using A for first color) (corner square)
With first color, ch 10; join with a slip st in first ch.
Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as tr), 6 tr in ring, ch 4, [7 tr, ch 4] 3 times in ring; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-4—4 ch-4 spaces.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in first 7 tr, *(2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in next corner ch-4 space**, sc in each of next 7 tr; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **; join with a slip st in first sc—4 corner ch-2 spaces; 11 sc on each side.
Round 3: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), skip next sc, dc in next sc, ** *ch 1, skip next sc, dc in next sc; repeat from * across to next corner, (dc, ch 4, dc) in next corner ch-2 space; repeat from ** around, ch 1, skip next sc, dc in next sc ch 1, skip next sc; join with a slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-4—4 corner ch-4 spaces; 6 ch-1 spaces on each side.

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ** *shell in next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * across to next corner, skip next sc of corner, 7 dc in corner ch-3 space, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from ** around, shell in next sc; join with a slip st in first sc—4 corner 7-dc shells; 3 shells on each side. Fasten off.

I love this pattern, but why are there TWO row 8's mentioned in the pattern instructions?

Hi Cynthialeeb, The separate row 8s are for if you're working a square that's joined on one side or on multiple sides, so depending on what you're working on, that's what you read. Another perfect project for spring. Could be a gift for a special person or just for personal collection. I've just pinned this afghan for future reference. In case I want to make this project. Lilac is a favorite color because it is a popular spring bloom and it is so appealing to the senses.
