The ripple is such a classic pattern and can be done up In so many ways. I have done them in pastels with fringes on every point, or tassels on every other point. I have even put pompoms on the points. You just need to use your imagination. Thank you for reminding me read this stitch really is.

How do I increase the size both wide and long?

To make it longer, just continue crocheting until you reach the length you want. If I want to make something wider I make a chain the width I want & work in pattern. You might have some chain left at the end. You can either undo the chain or cut it off, leaving enough to weave it in. Hope this helps.
