The Square Dance Crochet Blanket from Caron is a classic crochet motif blanket, that's easy to follow and quick to work up. Worked up by joining individually crocheted granny square motifs, this crochet blanket is great for spring and summertime nights.

This blanket is great to work on while it's warmer outside and if you're on the go because you can work up single granny squares wherever you go and you won't have to carry around an entire afghan.

Crochet HookJ/10 or 6 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Crochet Gauge10 dc and 5 rows = 4" [10 cm]. Motif = 8" [20.5 cm] square

Finished SizeApprox 56" [142 cm] square

Materials List

  • Caron One Pounds: Espresso (Contrast A, 1 ball), Persimmon (Contrast B, 2 balls), Lace (Contrast C, 1 ball)
  • US size J/10 crochet hook

Pattern

Motif

(Make 16 with A, 24 with B, 9 with C)

  1. Ch 4. Join with sl st to first ch to form a ring. (See diagram on page 2).

  2. 1st rnd: Ch 3 (counts as dc). 3 dc in ring. (Ch 3. 4 dc in ring) 3 times. Ch 3. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.

  3. 2nd rnd: Ch 5 (counts as dc. Ch 2). *Skip next 2 dc. 1 dc in next dc. (2 dc. Ch 3. 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp.** 1 dc in next dc. Ch 2. Rep from * twice more, then from * to ** once. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of ch 5.

  4. 3rd rnd: Ch 5 *Skip next ch-2 sp. 1 dc in each of next 3 dc. (2 dc. Ch 3. 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp.** 1 dc in each of next 3 dc. Ch 2. Rep from * twice more, then from * to ** once. 1 dc in each of last 2 dc. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of ch 5.

  5. 4th rnd: Ch 5. *Skip next ch-2 sp. 1 dc in each of next 5 dc. (2 dc. Ch 3. 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp.** 1 dc in each of next 5 dc. Ch 2. Rep from * twice more, then from * to ** once. 1 dc in each of last 4 dc. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of ch 5.

  6. 5th rnd: Ch 5. *Skip next ch-2 sp. 1 dc in each of next 7 dc. (2 dc. Ch 3. 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp.** 1 dc in each of next 7 dc. Ch 2. Rep from * twice more, then from * to ** once. 1 dc in each of last 6 dc. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of ch 5. Fasten off.

Finishing

  1. Sew Motifs together as shown in Assembly Diagram on page 2.

  2. Edging: With RS facing, join A with sl st to any corner. Ch 1. Work 1 rnd of sc evenly around all side edges, having 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Wow. I love this Square Dance blanket. Colors are not used every day but when you see something like this, you say oh, that is so beautiful. We just have to be bold about using colors our of the color wheel.

As the pattern states it is perfect for a portable project. I crochet a lot of the train and bus and I am always looking for something like this. It works up quickly and all you have to do is crochet or sew the squares together, put the edging on and you have a beautiful afghan. Thank you.
