One of our favorite stitches is the popcorn stitch and this pattern uses it to form the star in the center! Whether you're making this granny square just for fun or to make a whole afghan for a rock star person in your life, we guarantee that you'll adore the outcome. You can pick another color of yarn, but we do really like the boldness of purple. Purple gives even more power to your star pattern in the square.

Easy

Crochet Hook: H/8 or 5 mm hook

Yarn Weight: (4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Finished Size: 6 in square

  1. If using one color, ignore color changes
  2. Bold print: Repeated in pattern
  3. Join: W/slst in beg st
  4. Popcorn: 5dc in next st, remove hook and insert into 1st dc made, grab last dc and pull through

Rnd 1: W/A, Ch4, work 11dc in 4th ch from hook, join. (12dc)
Rnd 2: Ch1, fpdc in same st. [2dc in next st, fpdc in next st] Repeat around ending w/2dc in last st, join. (18dc)
Rnd 3: Ch1, fpdc in same st. [2dc in next st, dc in next st, fpdc in next st] Repeat around ending w/dc in last st, join. (24dc)
Rnd 4: Ch3, 4dc in same st, (remove hook and insert into the top of ch3, grab last dc lps, and pull through). [2dc in 3sts, pc in next st] Repeat around minus last pc, join. (36dc, 6pc) Do not chain in this rnd, you will start in the next st.
Rnd 5: Sc in blo of next st, and next 2sts, (mark this 3rd sc), sc in next 3sts. [Sk pc, sc in next 6sts] Repeat around, sk last pc, and slst into first sc. Fasten off Color A.
Rnd 6: W/B, join in marked st, (ch3, dc, ch1, 2dc) in same st. [Dc in next st, hdc in 6sts, dc in next st, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next st, (corner made) ] Repeat around minus last corner, join. (24dc, 24hdc)
Rnd 7: Ch3, dc in next st, [Corner in next sp, dc in next 12sts] Repeat around, ending w/dc in last 10sts, join. (64dc)
Rnd 8: Ch1, sc in same st, sc in 3sts. [3sc in next sp, sc in next 16sts] Repeat around, ending w/sc in last 12sts, join. Fasten off. (112sc)
