Cool looking pattern but I don't see how they could be connected to make an afghan since it's such an odd shape.

I would use a different color, say white or off white and do a couple rounds of either single or double crochet around the edges and where it's indented, do a longer stitch like a treble and that will bring it out and you will have a square. The lighter color will allow the design to remain.
