The Bubblegum Lace Baby Blanket is a perfectly square and easy baby blanket that is so soft and sleek and perfect for warmer months. This baby afghan is quick to work up and only uses chains and double crochet stitches, so it's perfect for crochet novices. 

Crochet HookH/8 or 5 mm hook

  • 3 balls of Wool and the Gang's Shiny Happy Cotton
  • 1 5mm crochet hook
  • 1 sewing needle

Pattern

Blanket Instructions

  1. Make a foundation chain of 88 chain stitches.

  2. Work 1 double crochet into the 4th chain from your hook. Work in double crochet to the end of the row. (85 stitches.)
    You will now start to work in rows of double crochet, alternating between working 1 row through the back of the stitch and the next through the front of the stitch.

  3. (Right side row) Make 3 chain stitches (this is your turning chain). Work in double crochet through the back of the stitch across the row.

  4. (Wrong side row) Make 3 chain stitches, work in double crochet through the front of the stitch across the row.

  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until your piece measures 12.5cm/5” from the foundation edge (approx. a further 3 times).

  6. Make 3 chain stitches.
    *Make 1 chain stitch, skip 1 stitch, work 1 double crochet into the next stitch.*
    Repeat the section inside the stars to the end of the row.

  7. Make 3 chain stitches.
    *Make 1 chain stitch, skip 1 stitch, work 1 double crochet into the next chain space.*

  8. Repeat step 7 once more. 

  9. Work 1 row in double crochet. 

  10. Repeat steps 6 to 9 once more. 

  11. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until your piece measures 36cm/14” from the foundation edge.

  12. Repeat steps 6 to 9 twice.

  13. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until your piece measures 58cm/22.5” from the foundation edge.

  14. Cut your yarn approx 15cm/ 6” from the last stitch, pull on the final loop until the end pops through - you have now secured the last stitch. Weave in any loose ends.

  15. With the right side of the blanket facing you, insert your crochet hook into the bottom right corner of the blanket. Make 3 chain stitches. Working from right to left, work in double crochet up the side edge of the blanket until you reach the top right corner. Cut the
    yarn and secure the last stitch.

  16. With the right side of the blanket facing you, insert your crochet hook into the top left corner of the blanket. Make 3 chain stitches. Working from right to left, work in double crochet down the side edge of the blanket until you reach the bottom left corner. Cut the yarn and secure the last stitch.

  17. Weave in any loose ends.
